The first written record of the settlement under the castle Zniev, originally the Turčiansky Castle, comes from the border deed of the King Koloman from 1113, where the settlement was called „Villa sancti Ypoliti“.
In 1578 the first arboretum of medicinal plants in Europe for production of medicaments was founded here. The ruins of monumental castle Zniev dominate in the height of 988 m above the village. The most precious, as to the history and architecture, is the area of former prepositure with the church and the premises of the parish church with adjacent buildings. The listed buildings are two buildings of Zniev’s Gymnasium, the former town hall, the building of former public school and several mansions. The village organizes the Zniev Cycling Days.
