The Town Svidník is a centre of the Region below Dukla. It is located at the conjunction of Rivers Ondava and Ladomírka, in the north-east part of Slovakia, in the Nízke Beskydy Mountains.
An important international road passes through Svidník directing through Vyšný Komárnik – Barwinek, the biggest frontier crossing from Slovakia to Poland. Tough the town and surrounding municipalities is not characterized by pretentious secular buildings, but more by the sacral, the bricked and especially the wooden ones, where the genius of local folk builder has fully expressed in. In the country below Dukla there are eleven wooden churches of Orthodox (Greek-Catholic) tradition, which are the National Culture Monuments protected by UNESCO. The region below Dukla is rich on a military history, its presence can be felt in many military historical monuments. The town Svidník dominates the Statue of army general Ludvík Svoboda, a single in the Central Europe; the town symbol is presented by the Czechoslovak Army Monument in Dukla and the Soviet Army in Svidník is an important monument, too. The Part of Military Machinery at the Military Museum in Svidník is unique as well. The town Svidník and its surrounding is rich on the Ruthenian and Ukrainian culture, which is still living in people below Dukla in crafts and the oldest folklore festival in Slovakia. Above the amphitheatre in Svidník there is the exhibition of ethnography of the Museum of Ukrainian Culture – open-air museum. The cultural monuments also includes the manor-house from 1795 and the building of former district court, a present residence of Podduklianske Educational Centre.
