







Below a picturesque southeast foot of Little Carpathians the village Smolenice is spreading. It belongs to the Region of Trnava. Smolenice is recorded for the first time in the deed from 1256 as Villa Solmus. From the village you can climb to the highest peak of Little Carpathians - Záruby (768 m above the sea level). In the Smolenice Carst there are a lot of tourist paths leading through the territory of National Culture Monument the Hill-Fort Molpír (400 m above the sea level); the National Nature Preserve the Valley Hlboc with the only one waterfall in the Little Carpathians is having the height of approx. 9 m. An integral part of Nature Preserve is the National Nature Monument the Cave Driny. The Museum Molpír with presentations of Little Carpathians flora and fauna and the excavated deposits from the hill-fort Molpír. On the uphill there is the Smolenice Castle, the former watch castle built probably in the 14th century for protection of Little Carpathians cols and the trade Czech road. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Pálfi Family started to build the new family residence on its place according to project of architect J. Hubert. A romantic look of the castleis underlined by large surrounding park with meadows. The castle is in ownership of the Slovak Academy of Science and is open only in July and August.
