Martin – The Slovak National Centre of Culture.
Martin and the Turiec Region are predicted to take advantage of any presented possibility given by dynamically developing tourist industry. First there are here concentrated monuments reminding a history of the Slovak nation, and second there are charming corners of Velka and Mala Fatra Mountains creating an unique confi guration of nature called as “Turiec Garden”. The international and the domestic cultural events, as e.g. Scenicka zatva (The Scenic Harvest), the show of theatre ensembles Dotyky a spojenia (Touches and Links), The Turiec Folklore Festival, The Cultural Summer and many others, create in Martin an imaginary podium that brings a pleasure and cultural amusement for both the domestic and the foreign visitors. The boom in the area of hotel trade and provision of restaurant services occurred lately as well. Some hotels passed through reconstruction and the number of multi-asterisk hotels has also increased. The town Martin serves also as the textbook of history. Approximately in 1 square kilometre the visitors can see such milestones of our history as the Memorandum Square, the 1st and the 2nd building of Matica Slovenska, The National House, The Slovak National Literary Museum, The National Cemetery, The Slovak National Museum a many others. This opportunity is almost used by school trips, when the students are learned through visual presentations by the educated guides. The number of biking tracks also grew up, the River Turiec attracts the watermen, The Martinske Hole provide excellent conditions for win- ter sports and thus the Turiec Region, thanks to its opportunities, becomes attractive for tourists wishing to spend here more than one day.
