MISSION
To preserve the nature of Tatras with its entire variety of biotic and abiotic nature.
VALUES OF TERRITORY
- glacially shaped mountain (glacial relief)
- forest of Tatras (almost 60 % of the territory)
- occurrence of original plants and animals,
some of which are endemic species,
i.e. occurring only in certain territory
and nowhere else in the world
(e.g. the Tatra mountain
chamois (Rupicapra
rupicapra tatrica)
and the long-fl owered primrose (Primula halleri).
FAUNA
Important animals:
- The Tatra endemic species and glacial relicts: the Tatra mountain chamois,
the Tatra mountain marmot, the Tatra snow vole...
- Big predators: brown bear, wild wolf, lynx lynx, wild-cat
- Birds of prey: golden eagle, falcon, windhover
- Owls: snow owl, eagle-owl, forest owl ...
FLORA
The endemic and relict species:
- Die Tatra endemic species: the High Tatras buttercup, eyebright, the long-
fl owered primrose...
- The West Carpathian endemic species: saxifrage perennial, the
Tatra larkspur, the glossy pink, the Tatra poppy seed...
- Glacial relicts (the rests from iceage): mountain avens,
acrtous alpina, ranunculus reptans...
HYDROSPHERE
On the territory of TANAP there
is more than 100 high
mountain lakes – tarns,
the largest is the Great Hincovo Tarn (20,08 ha). In the zone of the Štrbské Tarn there
is a border between the watershed of the Baltic See and the Black See. To the most
important Tatra waterfalls belong the Studenovodské Waterfalls, the Kmeťov Waterfall,
the Vajanského Waterfall, the Roháčsky Waterfall, the Waterfall Skok ...
THE HIGHEST PEAKS
The Gerlachovský Pike, 2655 m altitude, at the same
time the highest point in the Slovakia and the whole
Carpathian arc. The highest peak in the West Tatras
is Bystrá (2248 m altitude) and in the Belianske Tatras
Havran (2152 m altitude).
