The town Spisska Stara Ves is an administrative and community centre of Zamagurie, a region in the EastSlovakian north-west part at the frontier with Poland. The fi rst written record of Stara Ves comes from 1308. The most signifi cant monument and the town dominant is the Ascension of the Virgin Mary Roman-Catholic Church from the 14th century. Spisska Stara Ves is the entrance gateway into Pieniny, a suitable starting point for discovering the natural beauties and history of Zamagurie. The near Pieniny and Cerveny Klastor with the museum and traditional events, rafting down the Dunajec, as well as the Hydroengineering Structure Niedzica – Czorstyn immediately behind the frontier are of great temptation for tourists mostly in the summer season; in winter there are the known ski resorts in Spisska Stara Ves, Spisske Hanusovce, Jezersko and the Polish Niedzica as well. The town with 2,270 inhabitants is the third smallest town in Slovakia.
